Ancestral knowledge is the foundation for all knowledge that we perpetuate. Ahkilama is dedicated to honoring our genealogies and preserving traditions for future generations, which strengthens our connections to our ancestors — past, present, and future.

Māui Hā Kalama is Kānaka Maoli and Chinese. Hā aspires to one day return to the island of their family, Kaua’i, Hawai’i, to preserve traditional land stewardship practices.

Intersectionality

Kimberlé Crenshaw introduced the world to the concept of Intersectionality in 1989. At Ahkilama we acknowledge the intersections of systemic oppression that affect individuals who hold historically marginalized identities and are dedicated to the collective liberation of Neurodivergent, Queer, and Disabled communities of color.

Ahkilama publishes critical scholarship that follows in the footsteps of Black Feminists like bell hooks and Audre Lorde, Indigenous Educators like Tūtū Pukui and Winona LaDuke, and Decolonial Scholars like María Lugones and Haunani-Kay Trask.

Aloha ‘Āina

Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ʻĀina i ka Pono. The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness. We are all Indigenous to somewhere. The land provides and it is our Kūleana [ responsibility ] to steward it in turn. Ahkilama is currently based in Portland, Oregon, on lands that were originally inhabited by the Multnomah, Wasco, Cowlitz, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin, Kalapuya, Molalla, and the many communities of Native Americans whose sites rested alongside the Columbia and Willamette rivers.
